For most people, driving the speed limit is just common sense. The safer you drive, the less likely you are to be in an accident. Unfortunately, not everyone feels that way. There are, and will always be, a select group of people who forget that highways are not international speedways.

For these people, avoiding a speeding ticket can be tricky. With the use of radar jammers, however, it is becoming increasingly common for them to avoid being caught. A radar detector jammer scrambles the signals emitted from detector radar devices, allowing the speeder to get away.

Radar jammers, as the name signifies, are compact devices used primarily to scramble detector radar signals, particularly those emanating from speed guns used by policemen. Now that you know, you’ll probably ask, “Are they legal?” While purchase of a radar detector jammer is permissible by law, the now amended Communications Act of 1934 clearly stipulates that intentional use of a radar detector jammer will be construed as malicious interference.

Contravention of these laws can invite heavy fines and/or imprisonment. Before investing in a radar jamming unit, it would be advisable to first check state laws governing their ownership and use, as well as the models and types permitted. There are basically two types of car radar jamming devices available; active and passive.

Several models are available with approximately 90% of the models falling within the latter category. Active jammers constitute a mere 10%; however, it is important to note that this type is considered illegal by the US federal government since December 1997.

Since radar jammers are purchased for the purpose of avoiding a speeding ticket, it would only make sense that marketing and advertisements would try to emphasize their effectiveness. What they fail to mention, however, is that passive radar jamming units are only effective within about 100 feet from the speed gun.

Since most people are much farther away when their speeds are recorded, these models are just shy of useless. Illegal active devices are much more effective in preventing your speed from being detected; however, the result can easily be jail time and/or hefty fines, when the unit is discovered. Both active and passive radar detector jammer units can be purchased in today’s market, especially online. Active jammers come with hefty price tags, sometimes exceeding $1,500.

So how are police fighting back against this technology? Many policemen and state patrol are now able to detect when radar jammers are being used, and are able to pull a driver over for this. Additionally, the speed guns used nowadays are extremely advanced and much more difficult to jam. For most, testing their unit’s effectiveness by speeding past a state patrolman probably doesn’t seem like the wisest option.

With so many common components like the LCD flat panel TV and a surround sound home audio system, it can sometimes be confusing when additional equipment such as an A/V receiver is needed to tie home theater equipment together. A good A/V receiver is essential to having a good home theater system since it is literally the piece of equipment that serves as the command center for the entire system and gets all of the audio and video components working together in sync.

The functionality of an A/V receiver relies on everything being connected together properly. Once you’ve properly set up your receiver, home theater problems will generally vanish. In order to make sure that you can connect your various home theater components to your A/V receiver properly, here is some basic information on how the receivers work and what sort of components can be connected to one.

Function of an A/V Receiver

An A/V receiver is what could be considered the “command center” of your home theater system. This means that it receives input from some of your home theater devices, organizes that input, and sends it as output to other devices that are attached to your home theater system. This allows you to use your home audio system with surround sound in conjunction with your HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player and your LCD flat panel TV, all while controlling only a single home theater component. An A/V receiver sorts through all of the audio and visual signals that are sent by your devices, organizing them so that the appropriate output devices receive only the signals that they need and eliminating the mass of wires that can be required to try and manually connect all of these components without the use of a central receiver.

Perhaps more important is that A/V receivers generally work as a digital amplifier for your audio system. This means that you’ll be able to watch movies, play games, and listen to music in digital surround sound. To further improve your listening pleasure, many modern A/V receivers have built-in wireless service or USB ports so that you can stream music wirelessly from your home computer or plug in an external hard drive so that you can enjoy saved music and movies in their digital format without having to burn them to a CD or DVD.

Home Theater Components that Attach to an A/V Receiver

A variety of home theater components can be attached to an A/V receiver. In addition to your television, DVD player, and advanced disc formats such as HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players, you can include a stereo CD player, satellite television receivers, a digital video recorder (DVR) or similar device, and in many cases some older components such as an analog record player. Popular gaming systems such as the Nintendo Wii, the Sony PS3, and the X-Box 360 can also be connected to your receiver with ease so that you can enjoy surround sound to enhance your gaming experience. If your computer is nearby to your home audio system then you can attach the sound outputs to the receiver as well so as to take advantage of your existing surround sound system instead of having to rely on smaller computer speakers.

Using Your A/V Receiver

Once you’re ready to make use of your A/V receiver, setting it up is relatively easy. Using standard A/V cables, connect the outputs on your DVD player, stereo, satellite decoder, DVR, or similar components to the corresponding inputs on the back of your receiver. From there you simply need to attach your TV and speakers to the receiver’s outputs. Once everything has been properly plugged in and set up, you should be able to control many if not all of the functions of your home theater system directly from your A/V receiver.

If you are uncertain about installing your home theater A/V receiver and the corresponding components yourself, consult a professional to make the job simpler. They can get you on your way to enjoying your new home theater system in a hurry.

Sony BDP-CX960 400 Disc Blu-ray Disc / DVD MegaChanger (Black) Review

I previously owned the Sony DVP-CX995V 400-disc DVD changer, and it was so-so: If you wanted to use the unit’s directory for selecting a DVD and then play it, you had to fiddle with a slide switch on the remote!!! Other user interface issues were just as archaic, and it missed getting the titles of many (about 65%) DVDs off the media (whereas my PC did just fine).

The new BDP-CX960 is a MAJOR improvement:

1. The on-screen menu is much more extensive and capable, although a bit confusing when you first turn it on. Getting to the “home” (directory) menu screen when playing a disc is instantaneous (unlike the DVP-CX995V).

2. The ability to retrieve DVD/Blu-ray disc data from the Internet is a big improvement, and it only missed for about 2% of the discs.

3. Applying a firmware update over the Internet was seamless (with the DVP-CX995V, you had to order or burn an update CD).

4. Finally, better options for controlling the aspect ratio. I know there are idiots in the universe that want every movie (no matter the aspect ratio) to fill the entire screen (no matter the distortion), but I’m not one of them.

5. The remote control is a LOT easier to use!

6. The claimed ability for the unit to control a compatible TV (”Bravia” ?) seems nice, but I don’t have a Sony TV.

Minor criticisms & suggestions:

1. What’s with the bright light that shines in the display when you play a Blu-ray disc? Is that to impress your friends??? I had to set the display to “dim” to make the “Blu-ray” light not be distracting in a dark room. Feature suggestion to Sony: Option to disable the !@#$% light. Sony, if you are going to go to the trouble of having a bright light, why not have it shine on the numbers in the carousel tray when the door is open (duh …)?

2. Nit: Yes, I had a 1GB USB memory stick laying around, but how much money did that save Sony for extra memory?

3. What this unit REALLY NEEDS is an embedded web server (like virtually every other Internet-capable intelligent device on the planet) to provide a web interface over the Ethernet port for:

a. Controlling the device.

b. Keying in disc titles/genres/actors/etc. This would solve the keyboard interface issue without any additional hardware, and embedded web servers don’t take much memory or computing power. You could also import images for the discs that don’t have one (or the wrong one).

c. Saving & restoring disc titles/etc (preferably in XML format). Once my DVP-CX995V lost power, and the several dozen titles I had entered were gone (this was a MAJOR incentive to sell the DVP-CX995V). Granted, the Gracenote DB found virtually all of my current titles, but still …

4. Nit: When playing music CDs, the remote’s “TIME” button cycles between displaying on the TV the track time played, the track time left, the disc time played, and the disc time left. Ah, Sony, isn’t there enough room on the TV screen for all four times???

5. Why oh why does this player (like the DVP-CX995V) think it has to load some disc (any disc) before it will respond to the remote control? Still, it’s not as bad as the DVP-CX995V.

6. Nit: The unit displays (on its own display) the titles of music CDs when loaded, but not DVDs. Why??? This would be especially helpful if the title would be displayed as you rotated the carousel with the door open …

Other comments:

1. This is a 1080p-capable HD device, primarily intended for HDMI output, although there is component output (won’t send 1080p signals, though). Accordingly, there is no S-video output (although strangely enough, there is a composite video output).

2. Verizon’s FiOS remote control worked with the DVP-CX995V, but has no compatible IR codes for the BDP-CX960, and the BDP-CX960 remote knew nothing about the Verizon FiOS STB or my Harman-Kardon receiver. Time to look at the Logitech remotes …

3. Some reviewers (not here) have commented as to what’s wrong with just having a well-organized bookshelf to hold your CDs/DVDs/BDs, instead of this unit? Answer: DISK HANDLING.

All in all, this is an excellent product for my purposes, and the nits are only how to make the product better (all but one of my suggestions could be solved in software).

Very few companies get the implementation of new technology completely right the first time around, and LG seems to be no exception with its new Super Multi Blue Player which is designed to play high definition DVD’s in both HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats. That’s according to a journalist with USA Today.

The Super Multi Blue Player has earned wide spread recognition and praise for this possibility that it could broker a peace between Toshiba, which created the HD-DVD format, and Sony, which created that Blu-ray format. Although both formats are based on similar technology that’s able to encode much more data onto a disc than is possible with a standard DVD, the player of one format can’t play discs of another format. The result has been a format war that has scared many would be consumers away from buying players of either format because of fear of being left with the losing technology. Because of this fear of buying into a losing technology, the Super Multi Blue Player is a safe bet: no matter which format wins out in the end, the device will be able to play discs in the winning format.

The main problem with the Super Multi Blue Player according to the article is that it costs too much. It’s true that with a retail price of almost $1200, many consumers will be scared off from buying it. One of the supporting arguments for why this device costs too much is that it’s too far above the price of standard DVD players. The article elaborates by pointing out that the original DVD technology was a much bigger step above VHS video cassette technology than High Def DVD technology is above standard DVD technology. In the end analysis, the article argues, the Super Multi Blue Player simply isn’t worth so much more money than a standard DVD player.

While a $1200 price tag may be too steep for many consumers, the journalist seems to be missing the real question. The real question concerning the Super Multi Blue Player’s price is whether or not the difference between it and a Blu-ray player or an HD-DVD player is worth the extra peace of mind of the consumer knowing that he or she won’t have an obsolete machine when Sony and Toshiba have finally hashed everything out.

One fact that supports the idea that the Super Multi Blue Player may be cost effective is that it still costs less than the option of buying both a Blu-ray and an HD-DVD player separately. But only barely, and the advantage could evaporate with the possible introduction of lower priced Blu-ray players later this year. Then the question will concern whether or not the cost of devices like the Super Multi Blue Player can come down faster than HD-DVD players and Blu-ray players.

Another issue with the Super Multi Blue Player is that it doesn’t come with an HDMI cable which is necessary for connection to an HDTV. Plus the device has the annoying traits of not playing normal CD’s or taking full advantage of a lot of the bonus features of HD-DVD’s.

While the journalist can be criticized for comparing the Super Multi Blue Player to standard DVD players, he’s hit the nail on the head with some of the shortcomings of the actual device.

Philips BDP9000 Blu-Ray Disc Player Overview

The BDP9000 Blu-ray disc (BD) player lets consumers take full advantage of high-definition displays, playing content at native 1080i or 720p video resolutions. The BD player includes a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) output, an industry-supported connection, providing for all video and audio on a single cable. This allows users to easily connect the Blu-ray player to their existing home televisions. It will also decode standard multi-channel audio. Philips’ unique technology – one pickup with two lenses – allows it to also play standard DVDs and CDs in addition to Blu-ray discs while allowing for more cost-effective production. The supported DVD formats include DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R. Additional features of the BDP9000 include memory card reader, full audio format support, pop-up and always-on menu options; a full color high-definition animated button; and improved bitmap and text subtitles. The increased storage capacity of Blu-ray discs allows the Philips BD player to offer an astounding 25 GB of content on a single-sided disc (50 GB per dual layer) – nearly six times the capacity of traditional DVDs and enough space for two hours of high-definition movies or recorded content.

Philips BDP9000 Blu-Ray Disc Player Specifications

The Philips BDP9000 DVD player is the first model from Philips that plays high-definition Blu-ray Discs, which takes advantage of today’s flat-screen HDTVs by playing content at native 720p or 1080i video resolutions. The clarity and full-color spectrum of the vibrant video produced from Blu-ray movie discs, which provide five times the resolution of standard DVD movie discs is absolutely amazing. The Philips BDP9000 also offers backward compatibility for DVD movie and CD audio discs, and has an upconverting function that brings your favorite DVDs to near HD quality through the HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) output. The player includes one (HDMI) output, which provides uncompressed multi-channel digital audio, digital High Definition video delivered via a single cable (720p/1080p). High-definition signals up to 1080i are also available through the component video output for Bluray discs (standard DVD’s are output 480p through component video). Note that viewing high-definition Blu-ray Disc content requires an HDTV or HD-ready TV.
The user-friendly graphic interface includes a full-color, hi-def animated menu, with features such as advanced subtitle functions, video scene search and pop-ups–which provide informative tidbits and are embedded in Blu-ray Disc contents.
The unique 10-in-2 multi-format memory card slot displays 3-megapixel and larger images. It’s compatible with Secure Digital (SD), MultiMedia (MMC), CompactFlash, MicroDrive, XD Picture Card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick Duo Pro, Memory Stick Pro, RS MMC, and Mini SD. Other technical features include:

Up to 1080p (1920 x 1080p) output through HDMI digital output
Selectable 1080p/1080i/720p video upconversion of DVD’s through HDMI
BD-RE, BD-ROM, DVD ROM, DVD RAM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-ROM, CD-R/RW playback compatible
MPEG2, VC-1, H.264, HD JPEG decoding
12-bit/192MhZ video D/A converter; 24-bit/192KHz audio D/A converter

The BDP9000 provides a full range of audio decoding, including Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby DTS, and MP3. It has stereo outputs as well as coaxial and optical digital audio outputs for 5.1-channel home theater surround sound. It offers the following video output connection options:

HDMI: 1
Component Video: 1
S-Video: 1
Composite AV (RCA): 1

Blu-ray Disc Format
The next-generation Blu-ray optical disc format was created by a group of the world’s top consumer electronics companies, including Philips and Sony. This format was intended to meet the demand for playing and recording high-definition content, which far surpasses the video quality DVD can handle. With remarkable high quality video and crisp audio clarity, Blu-ray also offers increased storage capacity–up to 25 GB of content on a single-sided disc and enough space for two hours of high-definition movies or recorded content. (This is over five times the 4.7 GB of data a standard single-sided DVD disc can store.) The name Blu-ray is derived from the blue-violet laser the player uses to read and write to the disc.
Tech Talk
HDMI: is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV–all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats–standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).
Component video: (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance or “black and white” (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound or you can use a digital connection like “digital coaxial” or “optical”.
High Definition Formats: The most common high-def (HD) video format is 1080i, which displays video at 1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels. The “i” means that it is interlaced (interlaced means the screen scans the odd-numbered video lines first, then the even-numbered lines). The 1080p format has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, but it is a progressive scan format and thus has a constant vertical resolution of 1080 lines. The “p” denotes that it is progressive scan, meaning that all video lines are filled at the same time. Another high-def (HD) video format is 720p, which displays video at 720 vertical by 1280 horizontal pixels. It displays the same way as as 1080p except at a lower resolution.
What’s in the Box Blu-ray DVD player, remote control (multibrand for TVs; comes with batteries), printed operating instructions.

In true Sony fashion, the BDP-S350 will output a Full 1080/24p True Cinema picture, plus upscale your existing DVD collection to 1080p as well, when using the HDMI connection. On board decoding for Dolby TrueHD is here, also the ability to send out the bitstream for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD (Master Audio & High Resolution) as well. BRAVIA sync ensures that with the touch of a button, you can easily power on and synch the inputs of compatible Sony compatible BRAVIA flat-panel LCD HDTV sets and Sony audio/video devices connected to the players, via HDMI, for hassle-free enjoyment of high-definition Blu-ray Discs. Bringing it all together is the new Xcross Media Bar menu system, which is an icon based menu system for simple navigation of the BDP-S350’s menu system.

If you think you're ready to buy a Blu – ray player then it's worth understanding a little time with it, the basic Blu – ray features and conditions. There are subtle differences between players and know best what you are looking for.

Blu – ray is the standard high definition (HD) format now adopted by the entire domestic film market. High definition means that the image you see at a much higher resolution than theThe older DVD standard.

DVD (NTSC) standard resolution is 720 pixels wide by 480 pixels down the screen.

DVD (PAL) standard resolution is 720 pixels wide x 576 pixels down the screen.

Blu – ray 1080i and 1080p refers to the best vertical resolution, the Blu – ray, the 1080 offers down to 1920 pixels wide.

Most current LCD and plasma TVs will display the entire Blu – ray resolution, but it is recommended to ensurethat your TV can help to reach. Firstly, your TV has an HDMI connector on the back and, secondly check the manual for reference to 1080i or 1080p. If one is missing, then you will probably be impossible to achieve full Blu – ray resolution. HDMI is the connection to the HD video and audio transfer.

That's explains the basics of HD, now more for the subtle differences between Blu – ray player.

Upscaling to 1080p via HDMI means that youplay a lower resolution media like DVD on a Blu – ray player is scaled, then the 1080th up to the dissolution The picture is slightly better than the original DVD when played via a DVD player, but not their full Blu – ray clarity.

As with DVD players, there are regions that meet the players. DVD uses the regions 1 to 8 and 0 is region free.

Blu – ray used in areas A, B and C.

Region A: North and SouthAmerica, South and Southeast Asia, including Japan, Korea and Malaysia.

Region B: Europe, Australiia, New Zealand, Africa, Middle East and Greenland.

Region C: Central and South Asia, including China; Russica and Mongolia.

Virtually all Blu – ray players of online features. This is done either over a LAN or Wi-Fi interface provided to your Internet router. Internet connectivity is optional because it does not always come easily, in touch. If youdecide, then get connected, there are several services available, depending on the make and model of player you can decide to buy.

Sony BD-Live you can download additional movie content.

Samsung and LG players access to YouTube movies and MKV files.

Panasonic's Viera Cast, it's on demand TV service and more services will appear all the time as manufacturers bring continuous development services over the Internet.

Now for me onlineFunctionality is useful, very little, as I live in the country, and my bandwidth is pretty poor, but for those who have access to good bandwidth then the online services available to you through your Blu – ray players are value for money.

The features are very extensive, but I hope I have shown above, you are helpful and give you a good starting point from which to choose your Blu-ray player.
